15. Chesham flood alleviation project - Pednormead End
Aims: Improve wildlife corridors; Manage flow; Work together
Water body: River Chess
Project description
Project to reduce the risk to residential properties from fluvial and surface water flooding in the Pednormead End area of Chesham.
Based on historic records of flooding, site investigation and detailed modelling, Buckinghamshire County Council's Surface Water Management Plan (SWMP) for Chesham identified a severe risk of frequent flooding to several properties at Pednormead End, near the junctions of Missenden Road, Pednor Road, Church Street and Wey Lane. Flooding is likely to be due to a combination of surface water runoff from Missenden and Pednor Roads and flows in the River Chess exceeding the capacity of the culvert under Missenden Road. Both of these sources are likely to be exacerbated during high groundwater levels.
In addition to the properties which flooded in 2014 being offered Individual Property Protection through the government’s repair and renew grant, a successful Partnership Funding bid in 2014 enabled a feasibility study into a community scheme to improve flood risk management to be carried out. The study identified the following preferred measures:
As par tof this project a scheme to reconnect channel and floodplain and create additional flood storage upstream of the Missenden Road culvert through weir removal, channel narrowing & wetland creation. This project was completed in February 2018 by Bucks CC and The Chilterns Chalk Streams Project.
Further phases of work include increasing the capacity of the river culvert under the Missenden Road, to improve conveyance and reduce flood risk to properties upstream; and property level flood protection measures
