3. Tescos, Old Amersham - Channel restoration

Aims: Improve wildlife corridors; Manage flow

Water body: River Misbourne
Project description

Opportunity to restore natural chalk river habitat along an old mill leat adjacent to the Tescos store and car park, near Station Road in Old Amersham.

The R. Misbourne in this location has been heavily modified by man over centuries, having been widened, straightened and diverted from its original course, during the construction of Bury Mill (also known as Amersham Lower Mill) in the 17th Century.  As a consequence, river habitat has become degraded over time.  There is an opportunity to restore a more nature, narrow and sinuous channel through the addition of woody debris structures. Refencing of the left bank and the creation of livestock drinking areas would help to protect the banks from erosion and help vegetation growth to narrow the channel.  Some management of riverside trees would also be beneficial.
