Aims: Improve wildlife corridors; Manage flow; Work together

Project description

Working in partnership to implement improvements to the River Colne, Bonehead Ditch, Butts Pond and to the SSSI.

The Environment Agency and Spelthorne Council are working with the wider Staines Common Steering Group to agree detailed plans to improve the River Colne, Bonehead Ditch, Butts Pond and the SSSI.

The plans will include:

River Colne

  1. In channel improvements such as installing islands and woody habitat features and channel narrowing in over-wide sections.
  2. Stabilise eroding livestock crossing points.
  3. Embankment removal along the lower section of the River Colne to improve floodplain connectivity and improve the SSSI.
  4. Reduce miring risk in lower section along the River Colne.


Butt's Pond
 

  1. Remove some of the phragmites cover to increase the amount of open water on the pond.


Bonehead Ditch
 

  1. Selective pollarding of willow trees along the banks of the bonehead ditch to increase the amount of light that reaches the channel.
